Just the other day, my 2004 Acura TSX rolled 100,000 miles. I wanted to take a picture of the odometer when it happened, but due to a slight bit of road rage, I missed 99,999 thru 100,003; oh well. This is a big mile marker (no pun intended) and it takes dedication, money, and perseverance not to buy a new car. Knock on wood, the car has done great over the years with limited repairs and even a set of tires that I put 80k miles on (I'll save that for another story). When people ask me about how I maintain my vehicles, pre-Acura I would say meticulously. When I worked for the quick lube, I would change the oil every 2k miles using synthetic. All of the fluids were changed way ahead of schedule and I would wash and wax weekly. Now, since I've had my Acura, I've taken a whole different approach. This has been the first time I let the manufacturer dictate maintenance intervals rather than the commonly marketed miles and time frames. AND...I didn't use synthetic oil (I know, I know, some months ago I preached about how much better synthetic is and now I'm being a hypocrite).
Acura recommends I change the oil every 5k miles and other fluid changes at much longer intervals than I am accustomed to. Because I started my relationship with the TSX as a lease, I really didn't care about how much effort I was investing in maintenance, but because it is in my blood, I stuck to what I was suppose to do, and nothing more. I have no affiliation with Valvoline, but that was the oil my dealership used, so that is the oil that has been in my car from the beginning. Since birth, my TSX has had the following maintenances and services:
Oil Change - Every 5k miles
Coolant Flush - Once
Transmission Flush and Fill - Twice
Transmission Fluid 100% Replacement - Once
Air Filter - Every 15k miles
Wiper Blades - Twice a year
Cabin Air Filter - Once
Battery - Never
Brakes - Once at 30k then again at 65k
Axel Seal Leak - 80k
Brake Fluid Flush - Twice
Dashboard Electrical Recall - 80k
Brake Light Fuse - 75k or so
And that about covers it. As you'll see, nothing special, nothing huge. I have been very fortunate and I think it is a tribute to the quality engineering put forth by Acura. I would love to open my posts up to more questions regarding maintenance and car questions related to best, worst, and typical maintenance practices. I consider myself a subject matter OKert about vehicle maintenance seeing I spent 5 years trying to convince people to buy my services. So.. ask away and be delighted.
